Description

Very large antique painted French kitchen larder cupboard, or display armoire, made in the 1920s probably. The French might call it a vitrine. It has two central glazed doors, with gold stencil lettering (a later addition), in a break front (the middle is deeper than the side sections) flanked by doors with a metal gauze and curtain behind. It's a good quality mesh; not chicken wire or anything like that: it may well be original though I can't be sure. Working locks and keys; pretty brass keyhole escutcheons. Inside there are four shelves in each section; all completely adjustable or removable. Brass tipped feet. It's been painted cream and waxed to give a slightly distressed look. It looks white in most of the photos; the creamier ones are more true to life. The whole armoire dismantles and basically flat packs: the largest pieces are the base with its feet and the back panel of the middle section. Simple enough to assemble: just 8 bolts! Condition is pretty good: structurally it's sound enough and doesn't have much movement in it. One door a little stiff but not bad. Cosmetically it has a few bumps and scrapes but generally in keeping with the worn paint look. The golden lettering should come off easily enough with a blade or paint stripper if you don't like it. It seems a bit superfluous, like you needed to be told just how French it is, but I suppose it does have the look of a shop cabinet, and it's done well.
